If you have a damaged tooth or wish to have a better, brighter smile, porcelain crowns are one option you may find very appealing. They not only protect your tooth from further damage, but they look entirely natural. Here at Scola Family Dentistry, Murrieta, California, Dr. Valerie Scola is an experienced porcelain crown dentist. She will take the time to understand your unique situation to deliver the best smile possible.
Porcelain dental crowns are versatile and can be used for restorative or cosmetic purposes. For instance, they can replace a large damaged, worn, or old filling. Teeth with such fillings are often more susceptible to complications, like breakage. Crowns can also resolve large areas of dental decay that fillings may not be able to resolve. Often a tooth is given a crown following root canal therapy, and porcelain crowns are considered the “finishing” touch after the placement of a dental implant.
Porcelain crowns are also used as part of a dental bridge. The teeth on either side of the pontic (or replacement tooth) are installed with porcelain crowns to hold it in place.
Crowns can even be used to hide misshapen teeth. However, we can also offer a wide range of less invasive options to address cosmetic dental flaws.
A crown consists of the part of our tooth visible just above the gum line. Artificial porcelain crowns are designed to mimic that visible white part of a tooth. These crowns are made using dental materials that feel, resemble, and function like our natural tooth structure.
Crowns (also known as “caps”) are crafted to fit precisely over your natural tooth structure, similar to how a cap or crown would fit over someone’s head.
After removing decayed tissue, Dr. Scola will design and create the
restoration in the office using CAD/CAM technology while you wait. Using an intraoral scanner, she will make an impression of the tooth being crowned. This information is then passed to a milling machine to create your new crown. Dr. Scola will double-check to ensure the crown looks and feels good before she permanently affixes it in place.
Occasionally, our team will use the old-fashioned way to get impressions, and, in some situations, we still use an outside dental lab to design the restorations. But in most cases, crowns are made right here in our office.
